PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine improvable in fuel economy by improving combustion properties near a bore wall surface in lean burn operation to reduce unburnt fuel, and to improve the fuel economy. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine which can perform lean burn operation comprises a cooling mechanism cooling a cylinder head 20 and a cylinder block 10 independently by cooling water, and an ECU 100 as a temperature control means selectively increasing a cooling water temperature on the cylinder block 10 side of the cooling mechanism so as to suppress a decrease in air-fuel mixture temperature near the bore wall surface in a combustion chamber in the lean burn operation.
