PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material suitable as a component of a liquid-crystal composition having largerΔεand lower viscosity in combination and also a practical liquid crystal composition by using the same. SOLUTION: A 1-(trifluoromethyl)naphthalene derivative and a liquid-crystal composition containing one or more of the above compounds are provided. Since the compound has a negativeΔεof an extremely large absolute value, it is chemically stable to heat, light, water, etc., and is excellent in the compatibility with a recently widely used type of a liquid-crystalline compound or a liquid-crystal composition, it is suitable as a component of a practical liquid crystal composition driven by a low electric voltage.
