Panels of microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers may be used for the detection of types (i.e. oestrogen receptor (ER) positive or negative), grades and stages of human breast cancer. A diagnostic kit comprising a miRNA chip for detection of the miRNAs is provided. In particular, down-regulation of miR-874, miR-487a, miR-655, miR-30d* and/or miR-136 is indicative of Grade 2 Stage I breast cancer. Down-regulation of miR-509-5p, miR-365, miR-92a, miR-130a, miR-532-3p, miR-30b, miR-140-5p, miR-362-5p, miR-221, let-7e, miR-324-5p, let-7a, let-7d, miR-25, miR-20b, miR-491-5p, miR-99b and/or miR-345 is indicative of Grade 2 Stage II breast cancer. Down-regulation of miR-661 and/or miR-376a*, and/or up-regulation of miR-625*, miR-766, miR-200c, miR-598, miR-135a and/or miR-184 is indicative of Grade 2 Stage III breast cancer. Further panels are disclosed for detection of ER+ve and ER-ve breast cancer, Grade 2 and Grade 3 breast cancer, and stages I, II and III of Grade 3 breast cancer. Antisense molecules to miRNAs for use in therapy are also provided. |
