PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce flickering of an image. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel control circuit 131 performs backlight partial control for controlling a backlight 12 so that each of the light sources BL<SB>11</SB>to BL<SB>56</SB>has the optimum light emission luminance for an image signal for an image of an odd numbered field, and performs backlight total control for controlling the backlight 12 so that the light sources BL<SB>11</SB>to BL<SB>56</SB>have substantially the same maximum light emission luminance for an image signal for an image of an even numbered field.
