PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of securely detecting the replacement of a HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamp and advantageous to enhance operability. SOLUTION: The outer sphere 1204 of an HID lamp 12 is provided with a code part 34 readable with light emitted outward from the outer sphere 1204 and forming lamp information about the HID lamp 12. A reading section 42 reads the lamp information and supplies a control section 20 with the lamp information. When a power source is supplied to a lamp mounting part 14 and the control section 20 from the state in which supply of power to the lamp mounting part 14 and control section 20 is stopped, the control section 20 determines whether the HID lamp 12 has been replaced or not based on the lamp information supplied from the reading section 42 and lamp information stored in a lamp replacement detection memory 60.
