ELEVATOR MACHINE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING TORQUE-BASED MOTOR CONTROL

An elevator machine assembly includes a motor (22), a brake (26) and a traction sheave. A coupling (40) couples one of the motor to the traction sheave such that the traction sheave rotates responsive to movement of the motor or couples the brake to the traction sheave such that the brake selectively limits movement of the traction sheave. The coupling provides an output that is indicative of torque at the traction sheave. In a disclosed example, the coupling comprises a magnetoelastic material that provides a magnetic field that is indicative of torque at the traction sheave. An exemplary method of operating a motor for selectively moving an elevator traction sheave includes determining a torque at the traction sheave. A command signal for controlling the motor is generated based upon the determined torque.
