This control device is provided with: a first speed sensor for detecting the speed of drive wheels; a second speed sensor for detecting the speed of driven wheels; a vehicle wheel speed difference detection unit for detecting the difference in vehicle wheel speed between the drive wheels and the driven wheels on the basis of the detection value of the first speed sensor and the detection value of the second speed sensor; a bad road determination unit for determining that the road surface on which the vehicle is traveling is a bad road when the vehicle wheel speed difference is at least a first prescribed value; a first belt-holding-force-raising unit for increasing belt holding force, when the belt of a continuously variable transmission is held by a hydraulically controlled pulley, so as to be greater when the road is determined to be bad than when the road is not determined to be bad; an oscillation detection unit for detecting oscillations in vehicle speed on the basis of the detection value of the first speed sensor and/or the second speed sensor; and a second belt-holding-force-raising unit for increasing the belt holding force so as to be greater when the road surface is not determined to be bad and the vehicle wheel speed difference is at least a second prescribed value less than the first prescribed value, or when the vehicle speed oscillation value is at least a third prescribed value, than when the vehicle wheel speed difference is less than the second prescribed value and the vehicle speed oscillation value is less than the third prescribed value. This makes it possible to minimize belt slipping, irrespective of road surface conditions.
