PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document feeder and an image reader capable of reliably preventing a document discharged to the discharging position from being left behind. SOLUTION: An ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) 1 is capable of stacking and loading a plurality of sheet-like documents at a predetermined paper feed position, feeding the loaded documents to a document reading position one by one, and discharging the documents to the predetermined discharging position set on the lower side of the paper feed position, and comprises a paper feed tray with its top face being formed in a substantially flat shape at the paper feed position, a paper discharge tray with its top face being formed in a substantially flat shape at the discharging position, a movable tray 12 which is elevated/lowered between the paper feed position and the paper discharge position so that the top face supports a part of the document P at the paper feed position and the paper discharge position, a paper discharge detection sensor 16 for detecting presence/absence of the document on the paper discharge tray, and a CPU 141 for controlling the elevating/lowering of the movable tray 12. The CPU 141 has an elevation instruction unit 141g for elevating the movable tray 12 functionally based on the result of detection of the paper discharge detection sensor 16.
