A secondary battery having a heat absorbing layer is provided to inhibit a thermal runaway phenomenon upon internal or external impacts and to prevent ignition and explosion of a battery while maintaining the quality of the battery, thereby realizing improved safety. A secondary battery comprises a cathode, a separator, an anode and an electrolyte, wherein a heat absorbing layer comprising a heat absorbing inorganic substance is attached to the surface of the electrode and/or the separator that is in contact with the separator. The heat absorbing layer comprises a heat absorbing inorganic substance and a binder. The heat absorbing inorganic substance is used in an amount of 50-95 wt% based on the total weight of the heat absorbing layer, and comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, Zr, Ca, St, Ba and rare earth elements. |
