The hybrid vehicle (HF) allows the driving or braking force provided by the IC engine (1) to be supplemented by an independently controlled electric motor-generator (9). The braking of the vehicle is detected in the free-wheeling mode of the engine by a control device (18) for preventing an increase in the velocity of the vehicle by regenerative braking of the motor-generator. The control device may also be used for controlling the regenerative braking force of the motor-generator in dependence on the detected distance of the vehicle from the vehicle in front.
