A method for providing an idle screen layer given with visual effects and a method for providing an idle screen are provided to supply the idle screen so as to be suitable for various desires, thereby adding entertainment elements to a user interface of a mobile communication terminal. By providing a background layer, a background image corresponding to a time zone at a current location of a mobile communication terminal is displayed. By providing a landmark layer by nation, a landmark image corresponding to location information is overlapped on the background image of the background layer by using the location information received according to the movement of the mobile communication terminal. After that, the landmark image overlapped with the background image is displayed as an idle screen(730). By providing an event related layer, animation effects preset in order to a generated event are overlapped on the idle screen when the event is generated in the mobile communication terminal(740,750).
