PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating or measuring an energy consumption not only at rest but also during exercise by using expiration simply, noninvasively and yet accurately and to obtain a composition (pharmaceutical composition) suitably useful for the method. SOLUTION: A composition comprising a pyrimidine compound which is converted to a labeling CO<SB>2</SB>gas in vivo, discharged in expiration and labeled by at least one of isotope C or O as an active ingredient is used as the composition for evaluating energy consumption. The energy consumption of an examinee is measured through a process for orally administering the composition to an examinee and measuring the amount of labeling CO<SB>2</SB>discharged in expiration, a process for calculating a CO<SB>2</SB>formation rate (V<SB>CO2</SB>) from the amount of labeling CO<SB>2</SB>discharged in the expiration and, if necessary, a process for calculating the energy consumption according to the formula [energy consumption (Kcal/day)=CO<SB>2</SB>formation rate (mol/day)×134.25] from the CO<SB>2</SB>formation rate (V<SB>CO2</SB>).
