Method of making a heat-insulating element comprising the steps of making a padding of essentially pure discontinuous silk and enclosing said padding between a pair of containment layers to obtain a sandwich structure. The step of making the padding comprises the steps of providing a plurality of natural silk waste, macerating the waste to partially degrade the sericin and fibroin therein contained and obtain an intermediate mass of discontinuous fibres, subjecting the product of the preceding step to carding steps to obtain at least a mat of fibres, or one or more veils of discontinuous silk fibres, and optionally overlaying and binding a plurality of fibre veils in a direction orthogonal to the relative surface to form an interwoven three-dimensional structure. The invention also relates to a heat-insulating element comprising a mat of fibres or one or more discontinuous fibre silk veils. |
