Alcohols are produced by the reduction of marine animal waxes such as spermaceti and sperm oil by treatment with sodium and a lower aliphatic alcohol such as ethyl or butyl alcohol. In an example, sperm oil freed from moisture is mixed with ethyl alcohol and molten sodium is added with agitation, the reaction mixture being finally heated to about 150 DEG C. Alcohol is added to combine with any remaining sodium, and then water is slowly added and the mixture is allowed to stand. The aqueous layer is then removed, and the alcohols are purified if necessary by distillation in super-heated steam. The alcohols are suitable for the production of sulphuric esters. |
