PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new inhibitor consisting of an esterase inhibitor capable of binding with the surface protein of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) but not binding with a human cellular membrane, and useful for the inhibition of the HIV infection, etc. SOLUTION: This new modified C1 esterase inhibitor capable of binding with the surface protein of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) but not binding with a human cellular membrane, and used for inhibiting the HIV infection in vivo or in vitro, is obtained from a blood of a cattle or other mammalian animal, and does not show an affinity to a human cellular membrane and shows a very high affinity to the surface protein to the HIV. Also, the modified C1 esterase inhibitor is obtained by preparing a modified human C1 inhibitor mutant by using a gene engineering means.
