PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain at low cost a specific sterol derivative vitreous at room temperature, affording varied color depending on the angle of view and the incidence of light, and useful as a colorant with excellent coloring effect, in particular a formulation ingredient for cosmetics. SOLUTION: This new sterol derivative is shown by formula I (R1 and R2 are each a residue as a result of eliminating the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group of a natural sterol or hydrogenated product thereof having one hydroxyl group; (n) is 12-40), e.g. dicholesteryl 1,11-undecamethylenedicarboxylate. This sterol derivative which is vitreous at room temperature, is usable as powder with fixed color development, producible using inexpensive raw materials, and useful as a colorant with excellent coloring effect, in particular e.g. a formulation ingredient for cosmetics. This compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of the corresponding sterol with a dicarboxylic acid (diester) of formula II (R3 is H or a 1-5C alkyl), a dicarboxylic acid anhydride of formula III or a dicarboxylic acid halide of formula IV (X is a halogen).
