PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly efficiently and selectively obtain the subject compound capable of providing a magenta color to a cyanic color as a coupler for recording materials by the ring-closing reaction of a specific aminopyrrole derivative with a specific imino ether hydrochloride, while inhibiting a side reaction. SOLUTION: This method for producing a compound of formula III comprises the ring-closing reaction of a 2-aminopyrrole derivative of formula I (R1 is H, an alkyl or the like; R2 and R3 are each H, an aryl or the like) with an imino ether hydrochloride of formula II (R4 is H, an aryl or the like; R5 and R6 are each a 1-4C alkyl) preferably in an amount of 1.0-1.3 equivalents based on the compound of formula I in the presence of a base (for example, an organic base such as triethylamine) and an acid having a pKa of 4-8 (preferably acetic acid) or their salt (preferably potassium acetate). The base is preferably added in an amount of 1.0-2.0 equivalents based on the compound of formula II, and the acid having a pKa of 4-8 is preferably added in an amount of 1.0-2.5 equivalents. The salt is preferably added in an amount of 1.0-2.0 equivalents. A reaction solvent is preferably an alcoholic solvent.
