The device (1) has an adjusting lever (2), which is adjusted between operating and idle positions for adjusting an operating speed and an idle speed of an engine for specified normal operation of a hand-operated machine. The adjusting lever pass through a protection area with a critical position during the shifting of the lever between the operating and idle positions. A critical engine speed undesired for the machine operation is adjusted in the critical position. The adjusting lever is locked in the operating position by using a locking device. An independent claim is also included for an adjusting lever for a gas adjustment device.
