A write-once optical disk and a method for managing a spare area of the optical disk are provided to establish unified standards for a structure of a spare area and a temporary defect management area applicable to the write-once optical disk, thereby increasing usage efficiency of the optical disk. At least more than one spare area including a temporary defect management area is assigned when a disk is initially used. While using the disk, the assigned spare area including the temporary defect management area is expanded to set a new spare area. When expanding the spare area, a temporary defect area is assigned together. The temporary defect area maintains a specific ratio in the expanded spare area.
