<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hold inspection image data with defects found therein while security is taken into account, by carrying out defect inspection of printing images on the basis of the inspection image data acquired by reading the printing images. <P>SOLUTION: After the defect inspection (S122) is carried out, a substitution designation input of indicating utilization of a test chart is carried out (S124). The test chart similar to the inspection image data is selected (S128) on the basis of an image data analysis (S126). The presence or absence of defect detection is checked on the basis of history information with the inspection result recorded therein (S132). If no defects are detected, the inspection image data is deleted and the fact of the deletion is recorded in the history information (S134). On the other hand, if the defect is detected, it is selected on the basis of the substitution designation input (S136) whether the inspection image data is to be stored (S140) or whether the selected test chart is to be printed and the data is to be stored (S138 and S140).
