A Bluetooth(R)-based communication system and method are disclosed. A communication method for a short range wireless communication system includes generating, at a first terminal, a list of second terminals supporting a chat function; establishing at least one asynchronous connectionless link between the first terminal and at least one second terminal; and exchanging chat packets through the asynchronous connectionless link between the first and second terminals. The communication system and method for portable terminals according to the present invention enable the portable terminals to exchange messages in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) frequency band without engagement of a fixed base station, whereby it is possible for the portable terminals to communicate outside a main communication system coverage.
