The device (1) has a locking control device (12) for generating an electrical control signal based on status signals, which represent status of devices in a motor vehicle. A seat occupancy detection device (11) generates a seat occupancy signal that represents an occupancy condition of a seat of a passenger compartment of the motor vehicle. The locking control device generates the control signal, which leaves a mechanical actuator (13a) in a specific position or moves into the position, when the seat occupancy signal indicates the occupancy condition of the seat of the passenger compartment. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a safety locking device.
