PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plunger initial position setting device easily removed after mounting a tensioner, in a tensioner for preventing projection of a plunger housed in a cylinder by action of hydraulic pressure or the like and preventing projection of the plunger in a initial state in mounting the tensioner. SOLUTION: Shoes 14a, 14b are attached to a tip of a housing 6 and a tip of the plunger 5, recess grooves 25a, 25b or holes are formed by passing through the both sides of the shoes 14a, 14b, and a set wire 4 is inserted in these recess grooves 14a, 14b or holes and both tip ends are tied together to prevent the projection of the plunger 5.
