The method involves determining an optimal lighting position regarding a camera position on the basis of a visibility map (7) and objects characteristics (4) which can be examined. The map provides additional visibility information about the shading of the object characteristic which can be examined. On the basis of the visibility map a suitable space range is selected, which are consulted for the determination of the optimal lighting position. An independent claim is included for a device.
