A composition for treatment of atopic dermatitis containing the extract of Rumex japonicus Houtt is provided to eliminate side effects such as liver toxicity in its application, relieve itching, flare and erythema, inhibit change of inflammation cell distribution, and reduce the number of S. aureus and levels of IgE(immunoglobulin E) and IL-4(interleukin 4) in blood. The composition for treatment of atopic dermatitis contains 0.5-40 wt.% of the extract of Rumex japonicus Houtt which is prepared by dipping Rumex japonicus Houtt in boiling water for 10-60 minutes, (b) filtering the extract of Rumex japonicus Houtt, and (c) centrifuging the filtered solution at 1000 to 10000g and 1-10 deg.C for 5-50 minutes, and separating the supernatant as an effective ingredient, wherein the composition is administered orally or percutaneously.
