PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably perform auto-focus even against the sun in a digital still camera. SOLUTION: A determination is made whether a subject stands against the sun or not (step 102). When the subject does not stand against the sun, the level of the output signal of an imaging device in an auto-focus detection area is detected or the focusing position of the subject is detected from signal components (step 111, 112). When the subject stands against the sun, the detection area is set so as to include the edges of the subject (step 113), and the focusing position of the subject is detected (steps 111 and 112).
