PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which outputs an image with a quality near the image quality targeted by the maker even when an ink, a recording head, and a recording medium which are not recommended by the maker are used. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a carriage 3 which operates a recording head 7, in which a plurality of recording nozzles are arranged, in the main scanning direction, and discharges an ink from the recording head 7 to perform recording on a recording medium. The apparatus has a detection means to examine whether a consumable required for image formation is the consumable specified by the maker. When the detection means detects that at least one of the consumables is not the consumable specified by the maker, an operator is notified of the fact that the consumable specified by the maker is not used. The apparatus is provided with a notification means which proposes to an operator the switchover from the standard image-forming method which is optimized to the consumable specified by the maker to an image-forming method in which image stability is further improved.
