PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the disadvantage that, when using a serial data interface in a data converter, the data interface continuously operate, even when a functional failure occurs in the data converter, and when data are defective, a microprocessor regards the data as being satisfactory, to keep reading the data. SOLUTION: A data converter 10, for digitizing an analog input signal and providing digital output data at one or more conversion cycles, includes a logic circuit 28 for generating a data conversion diagnostic bit having first and second logic states. The data conversion diagnostic bit toggle-operates from one logic state to the other logic state, when a conversion cycle is completed and when the digital output data from the previous conversion cycle have been read. The data conversion diagnostic bit remains in the same logic state, when no conversion cycle has been completed or when no reading of the digital output data has been carried out.
