An air conditioner has a refrigerant circuit in which a refrigerant discharged from a compressor (1) circulates, a pilot-operated four-way valve (2) for switching the flow of the refrigerant in the refrigerant circuit, a control section (30) for controlling the four-way valve (2) and the compressor (1), and an EEPROM (31) for storing positional information on the four-way valve (2) when operation of the compressor is stopped. When the compressor (1) is started for the first time after electric power is turned off, if positional information on the four-way valve (2) read from the EEPROM (31) does not correspond to the next operation mode, the control section (30) operates the compressor (1) at a predetermined frequency to activate the four-way valve (2), switching the four-way valve (2) to a position corresponding to the next operation mode.
