PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable high-speed response in a magnetic tape, and to enlarge a storage capacity by effectively using the recording surface of the magnetic tape. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape MT is configured, equipped with at least one servo track ST, having a peak or a bottom signal intensity distribution in the width direction of a tape T. The servo track ST is configured, for instance, such that one magnetic moment 41 directed toward the width direction is disposed. A servo signal is read from the servo track ST by inductive servo signal reading elements SRa and SRb having reading width smaller than the width of the servo track ST, and a magnetic head H is tracking-controlled according to the output of this servo signal.
