[Problem] To provide a projection optical system and image projection device with which an intermediate image can be magnified by a prescribed magnification while suppressing optical aberrations and speckle noise. [Solution] The present invention has a light source that emits a laser light, an image-forming optical system that forms a prescribed intermediate image on the basis of the laser light emitted from the light source, and a projection optical system that magnifies the intermediate image to a prescribed magnification and guides said image to a surface for projection, said projection optical system being provided with: a first optical element that reduces speckle noise included in the intermediate image; a second optical element that diverges incident light and emits said light as divergent light having a prescribed divergence angle; a first magnifying optical system that magnifies the intermediate image; and a second magnifying optical system that further magnifies the image that has been magnified by the first magnifying optical system.
