<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inorganic fluorescent substance emitting orange or red light having a wavelength longer than that of conventional fluorescent substances, having high luminance and being chemically stable and further to provide a lighting apparatus using the fluorescent substance and excellent in color rendering properties and an image display device, a pigment, an ultraviolet light absorbent or the like excellent in durability. <P>SOLUTION: The fluorescent substance contains an inorganic compound obtained by forming a solid solution of a matrix crystal represented by the formula A<SB>x</SB>Si<SB>y</SB>N<SB>(2/3x+4/3y)</SB>(0<x<2 and y=2-x) (wherein the element A is at least a kind of element selected from Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) with the metal element M (wherein M is at least one element selected from Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb) as a main component and the fluorescent substance is monoclinic. The inorganic compound is preferably represented by the formula: A<SB>x</SB>Si<SB>y</SB>N<SB>(2/3x+4/3y)</SB>:M (wherein 0.8≤x≤1.1). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
