PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producingβ-type sialon phosphor material that has high emission efficiency by virtue of the high uniformity of crystals and the unusual phase suppression and can suitably be used for image display devices such as a back light for LCD. SOLUTION: The method for producing theβ-type sialon phosphor material comprises a firing step for a mixture containing powders of metal compounds, wherein the mixture consists of (A) a metal compound powder containing an optically active element M and (B) a compound that forms a liquid phase at a temperature lower than the firing one, and the metal compound powders are coated with a compound containing at least one selected from Si and Al.
