PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication method by which other device on a network can be easily discriminated whether a data input preparation is ready at a target device side in the case of transmitting stream data in the network adopting the IEEE 1394 system. SOLUTION: In the case that an input device 2 receives stream data outputted from an output device 1 connected to a prescribed network, when the output device or other device transmits a command to the input device 2 for the setting of a data input section 2b of the input device 2 for the preparation of reception of output data from the output device, the input device 2 prepares data denoting that the input setting is not available at least temporarily as a reply from the input device with respect to the command. When the sender of the command receives the data denoting that the input setting is not available at least temporarily, the sender of the command which corresponds to the reply.
