[Class 51 (ii).] In an oven for coking briquettes comprising vertical coking chambers a separated by horizontally-flued heating walls b which are fired by the gas generated in the ovens a, the gas is supplied through vertical passages d communicating at their upper ends with the chambers a, and dampers s are provided for separately regulating the gas supply to the individual heating flues b. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the passages d are disposed at opposite ends of adjacent chambers a, there being provided at the other end of each chamber a vertical waste gas duct h also communicating with each heating flue b through passages independently controllable by dampers s. The passages d on each side of the battery are connected at their upper ends by an horizontal compensating duct e. The air for combustion is preheated in flues at the lower ends of the chambers a and is delivered to the heating flues through branches from vertical pipes g. Figs. 5, 9 show a modification constructed for recuperative heating of the combustion air, the passages d, in this case, being all located at the same end of the chambers a. The waste gases from the heating flues k traverse, on their way to the vertical offtake t, flues r which alternate, in the vertical direction, with airheating passages m fitted with transverse baffles o, Fig. 9, the heated air passing to the supply channels n and thence to the heating flues k through damper-controlled openings p.
