The invention relates to a method for processing postal items using a divider that represents a region of interest. The method for processing postal items comprises the following steps: sequentially passing the items in front of a camera (120) for producing an image of a face of each item including an information about the postal address; filtering the image of a current item for determining in the item image at least one region of interest (ROI) containing the address information; sending to an automatic recognition unit (130) for the OCR recognition of postal address information, said filtered image for extracting the postal address; and forwarding the current item towards a sorting outlet. In order to produce a filtration mask, a card of the divider type (20) having a face on which said region of interest is represented, is passed in front of the camera (120).
