An image processing apparatus and an image processing method are provided to perform a suitable image process in response to various color systems. A decoding unit(120) extracts color information from an image signal including vertical synchronous information indicating a vertical scanning frequency of an image, the color information, and frequency information of the color information. A frequency storing unit(140) stores the vertical scanning frequency and a frequency of the color information corresponding to the vertical scanning frequency. A frequency estimating unit(130) estimates the vertical scanning frequency of the image signal and the frequency of the color information on the basis of the vertical synchronous information and the frequency information of the color information. When it is judged that the vertical scanning frequency and the frequency of the color information estimated by the frequency estimating unit(130) are identical to the vertical scanning frequency and the frequency of the corresponding color information stored in the frequency storing unit(140), a control unit(150) controls the decoding unit(120) to extract the color information on the basis of the frequency of the corresponding color information.
