Foreign materials, such as particles, which adhere on an optical member arranged on a photographing optical axis are more effectively removed in more effective timing. An imaging device is provided with an imaging element which performs photoelectric conversion to an image of an object to be photographed. The imaging device is provided with an optical element arranged on a side close to the object of the imaging element; a foreign material removing device for removing the foreign materials adhered on the surface of the optical element; an instructing section for giving instructions for turning on and off the power supply of the imaging device; and a control section for making the foreign material removing device remove the foreign materials according to the instruction to turn off the power supply of the imaging device from the instructing section.
