An ATM(Automated Teller Machine) having a reject box and an operation method thereof are provided to store rejected bills for banks and customers separately by dividing the reject box into non-accepted bill, non-circulated bill, and counterfeit bill storage parts and to store the bills separately according to the damaged state of the bills in a recycle box and the reject box. In an ATM having a reject box, a discriminating unit judges whether bills are abnormal. The reject box is composed of a non-accepted bill storage part(110) collecting and storing non-accepted bills if the customer does not receive the bills loaded in a depositing and drawing unit by a drawing request of the customer; a counterfeit bill storage part(120) formed separately from the non-accepted bill storage part to store the bills determined as counterfeit bills in the discriminating unit; and a non-circulated bill storage part(130) formed separately from the non-accepted bill storage part and the counterfeit bill storage part to store the bills determined as non-circulated bills in the discriminating unit.
