The system (1) has a pressurizing medium line (10) connecting a suction chamber (4a) of a compression stage (4) of a multi-level compressor (2) with atmosphere. Pressurizing medium chambers (12a-12d) and a pressurizing medium storage tank (16) are connected with a compression chamber (6b) of another compression stage (6) of the compressor over another pressurizing medium line (18). The pressurizing medium storage tank is connectable with a suction chamber (6a) of the latter compression stage, by a third pressurizing medium line (20). A valve (22) is arranged in the third line. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a two or multi-level compressor with compression stages. The valve is designed as a 3/2-way valve.
