The housing (3) for the sensor (4) has a mounting section (10) which holds it in position when inserted in a bore (2). This section has a fixed seal (11) to seal it externally and a sealing ring (5) to seal it from the shaft (1) which the circular housing embraces. A shaft encoder wheel (7) is fixed to the shaft so that a gap exists between it and the housing.
