PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device and a high pressure lamp lighting system capable of lighting rapidly replaced high pressure discharge lamp after cutting off supply of electric power only to the high pressure discharge lamp requiring replacement and replacing the high pressure discharge lamp safely without cutting off power supply to all the connected high pressure discharge lamps in replacing the high pressure discharge lamp which became light-out. SOLUTION: For instance, a pulse reset signal is made by forming power supply OFF state of approximately 0.2 seconds for several times, and when such pulse reset signal is input into a power supply voltage detecting means 21, a control IC 16 carries out control to restart the high pressure discharge lamp L by actuating a high pressure pulse generating means IG again by a lamp voltage detecting circuit (light-out detecting means) 18 in the case the high voltage discharge lamp L is lighted-out, and carries out control to ignore the pulse reset signal in order to maintain lighting-on of the high pressure discharge lamp L when the high pressure discharge lamp L is kept lighted on.
