An apparatus and a method for providing traffic information are provided to improve reception probability of traffic information of high link identification by increasing transmission frequency of the high priority link identification. A real time traffic information comparison and analysis module detects the real time traffic information data at the point of time to provide traffic information(S410). The real time traffic information comparison and analysis module calculates the velocity difference by comparing and analyzing the current velocity and an average velocity(S420). The real time traffic information comparison and analysis module generates the comparison analysis result table including the velocity difference information for each identification and stores the generated table in a comparison analysis result database(S430). A road importance setting module sets the road importance for link identification by using the comparison analysis result table(S440). The road importance table is generated and stored in the road importance database(S450). A traffic information transmitting unit prioritizes link identification with high road importance according to the content of the road importance table and provides the traffic information service(S460).
