The pellet core contains a fuel selected from coal and/or powdered coal. A pellet for use as a starting material for the preparation of crude iron in a metallurgical vessel (e.g. blast-furnace) comprises a mixture of iron ore and/or iron ore concentrate, a combustible fuel, and optionally a flux and binder. The pellet core contains a fuel selected from coal and/or powdered coal. An Independent claim is also included for (a) the preparation of crude iron using these pellets, fuel not in the core also including coke, natural gas, oil or tar, and (b) the preparation of the pellets, by preparing a mixture of powdered iron ore, flux and binder, enriching the mixture with powdered fuel, and drying, heating, firing and cooling the resulting granules to form pellets.
