PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a continuously cast piece having no longitudinal crack by observing a surface shape in the width direction of cast piece just below the outlet side of a mold and adjusting casting velocity and a secondary cooling water flowing rate at the point of time when the abnormality is detected. SOLUTION: Ruggedness on the cast surface just below the continuous casting mold, is measured in the width direction of the cast piece, and based on the variation with time of a ruggedness profile, it is measured whether the surface defect of the cast piece exists or not, to adjust the casting velocity and the secondary cooling water flowing rate.
