A compact hybrid heat exchanger (10, fig 1) comprises a passive heat exchanger (12), an active heat exchanger (16) and a fan (14). The passive heat exchanger (12) comprises a radiator and the active heat exchanger (16) comprises a thermoelectric cooler assembly. The thermoelectric cooler assembly 16 comprises a cold plate 32, a first thermoelectric cooler (TEC) 34 in thermal communication with a first side 42 of the cold plate 32, and a second TEC 36 in thermal communication with a second side 44 of the cold plate 32. A coolant is circulated through the cold plate 32 by an external pump. The fan (14) is arranged to draw air through the radiator (12) and to blow air onto the thermoelectric cooler assembly 16. The hybrid heat exchanger (10) can be operated with or without power supplied the to TECs 34, 36. The hybrid heat exchanger (10) is useful in cooling electronic components that generate a large amount of heat such as a CPU. |
