<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that can improve the operational convenience when a user interrupts or resumes playback of a recording medium, and an operation method for such a projector. <P>SOLUTION: When a lens cover open/close detection sensor 51 detects a state change of a lens cover 50 from open to closed, a lamp 11 is turned off, and the playback by a DVD playback unit is interrupted.
