PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To know a residual quantity of a liquid in a liquid cartridge in many stages also when a fixed optical sensor is used. SOLUTION: A member to be detected 115, and a float member 116 fixed to the member 115 are set in the liquid cartridge 110. When the liquid in the liquid cartridge 110 decreases to approach the float member 116, the float member 116 moves in a direction Q1. The member 115 moves in operative association with the movement, and a light shutoff part 162a, a slit 161, and a light shutoff part 162b formed in the member 115, are sequentially located at a detection position 142. Which one of the light shutoff part 162a, slit 161, and light shutoff part 162b is located, is detected by the optical sensor, whereby the residual quantity of the liquid is grasped in at least three stages.
