A multi-channel decoding and encoding method and apparatus are provided to up-mix a left channel and a right channel to decode the left and right channels in the beginning and down-mix the left and right channels to encode the left and right channels in the end to obtain high sound quality even in scalable channel decoding and reduce power consumption. A multi-channel decoding method includes a step of generating a direct signal and a to-be-decorrelated signal using a spatial cue for a signal down-mixed from a multi-channel by an encoder(238), a step of decorrelating the to-be-decorrelated signal(240), and a step of up-mixing the direct signal and the decorrelated signal(252).
