The arrangement is assembled of four clamping jaws and the gap retaining unit to be used in particular for body components of a vehicle to be joined by laser welding. The unit comprises two slightly elastic flat elements attached with one end to a clamping block acting in combination with a swivel lever. Each of the elements is provided with a scanner (12) joined to an inclined support surface (11) and a separating device (13) with a cutting edge and designed as a rotating twin blades (14).
